Protests in Korea over agreement allowing animals over 30 months from the US

Korean meat industry entrepreneurs have staged a protest in front of the US Embassy in Seoul to express their rejection of the trade agreement reached by their country with the Trump administration, which could lead to a greater volume of US beef imports, as it would allow beef from animals over 30 months of age at the time of slaughter. The protests were organized by the Hanwoo Association, which represents about 80,000 cattle producers, according to Eurocarne.

In response to the Korean protests, Dan Halstrom, president of USMEF, described the trade achievement with South Korea as a success, noting that South Korea is one of the main markets for US beef. “We remain hopeful that Korea will address the non-tariff barriers it imposes on US beef, aligning market access with international standards. USMEF appreciates the tireless efforts of both USTR and USDA to remove these restrictions,” Halstrom concluded.
